The Exchange is a documentary film that was a result of the Chicago–Kassel project.

“The Exchange,” a film following follows the five Passport Carriers from Chicago’s south side to Kassel, Germany in the summer of 2012. The film explores the origins of Passport Carriers, with the passports as tools for empowering inner city youth. Supported by artist Theaster Gates, the students attend the international art exhibition dOCUMENTA(13) and reflect on how the experience transforms their understanding of community and global citizenship.



The film has been widely praised and continued to receive multiple accolades including:
